The hosts tackle what it means to be a provider today, discuss how men can balance financial and emotional support, and explore the evolving roles in relationships. In the spirit of the trend “Guys Under 30 Ask, Guys Over 30 Answer”, Jamey answers audience questions on self-compassion, accountability, and being present in a fast-paced world.
From redefining traditional gender roles to maintaining healthy relationships with exes, this episode offers relatable insights and practical advice.
Whether you're seeking self-compassion or reflecting on life's journey, Jamey and Liz provide an engaging discussion on modern masculinity and building fulfilling, balanced lives.
TIMECODES:
(02:58) Topic Begins: Men Under 30 Ask, Jamey (Man Over 30) Answers
(04:57) @lookforrev: “What skills have you learned around self-compassion?”
(09:22) @AustinCA03: "Dads who had kids relatively early, how do you maintain balance in your life while also providing for your child and spouse?"
(13:58) Theo: "What are the interpersonal or relationship skills you wish you could have learned earlier and how would you have gone about learning them?"
(20:37) James: How are expectations of what it means to be a provider changing when we are all struggling in this economy?
(25:25) Riley: "What are the positives of getting older?"
(31:06) "What can I do to help overcome the voice that's telling me to keep being miserable?"
(35:49) Jamey asks Liz: "At what point does it become easier?"
(39:31) "Who has been able to maintain strong and healthy relationship with their exes?"
QUOTES:
"I think you fall in love much more easily when you accept the person that you are trying to be in love with." - Jamey
“The voice inside my head that I thought was me for 30 plus years is actually a liar. And in the moments where I feel like that voice is really loud, that's a signal to me that I need to behave differently. Because I think it's hard to change the voice, but if you are treating yourself with compassion and you're treating yourself kindly, then that voice will become less high-pitched.” - Liz
“In this day and age where more and more women are being seen and valued for their contributions, as they should, have opportunities more than maybe at one time were afforded to them, I think families have to consult and discuss what providing means. It doesn't just mean financially. Does dad provide for the family emotionally, taking care of the home, watching out for the children, taking them to baseball practice or laundry and dishes?” - Jamey
"I feel like friendships, relationships are built in the nothingness, in the mundane stuff, and just the normal stuff." - Jamey
"I'm gonna look back at this time and think I was so young. I'm not gonna think about all the insecurities that I have right now about how aging is showing up in my body." - Liz
“How we can be better in the world, how we can be better to our parents, our children, our friends, our workmates? When you are fully accountable, then you can have real forgiveness for yourself.” - Jamey
“If you can see the end in the beginning, you might think that very thing that you were distressed about, knowing that that's what's going to then get you to the next stage. So I think part of the thing to make life easier is embrace where you are in this day.” - Jamey

This is really simple. If women were earning less college degrees than men now by the same gap then she'd be calling it .... inequality. And it does seem like there are policies set in place to oust (white) men, infact, even asians are discriminated against and that is not even a secret.

I think that this ‘debate’ was an extremely good example of why his colleagues and others tried to discourage him from writing his book about the facts he researched. Picking up a single word and then weaponizing it to attack an imaginary opponent with unlimited loathing has been normalized across the nation, leading to discouragement in addressing real issues.

I think Liz’s point on race playing a part shouldn’t be so quickly disqualified. The ease and quickness with which crimes against black victims’ are broadcast is alarming. There’s Sarah Bland, Megan thee stallion and so many more. There isn’t the same care used in protecting the identity of the victims when they are black. There isn’t the same protection black victims experience

It’s fear. His dad worked for Frank Lucas, who most people know about through the movie American Gangster. So Diddy grew up around an absolute power and authority. If frank wanted someone dead they’re dead. Diddy has the same people/children of those people in his circle so if he gives the word then whomever goes against him is iced. He has total control over others because of fear, that’s why no one says no. They’ll end up dead

As a 23 Y/O woman, I've noticed that a lot of guys we end up dating are insufferable, chronically addicted to porn, and have rotted their prefrontal cortex to the point that they have no desire for physical intimacy.. they're commitment-phobic incels that reject every decent woman they encounter.. men dont actually know what they want. They breadcrumb us, they fumble us, and they string us along. They have become absorbed with hookup culture. And it seems they'd rather remain creatures of habit with their friends and juvenile endeavors instead of building careers and leading healthy lives.

Why do we hold on to these outdated gender roles and expectations? Men can be kind without chivalry and old fashioned gentle men codes. Chivalry is also incredibly infantilizing to women because you're basically treating her like a child who needs a father figure to protect her.

I feel like you guys are missing a huge factor. This is US culture. It’s in the movies, books, music. But of most significance it’s in the government. You glorify the troops and 800+ military bases around the world. In 70 years, US start war after war after war… coup d’etats… killing millions and millions of innocent people… assassinating democratically elected and loved leaders… destabilizing countries… destroying homes and families… ALL WITH IMPUNITY. USAns trust the government every time for 70 years…. every assassanatuon… every war… every sanction… you accept and/or look away… you believe in US meddling and exceptionalism… US “freedom and democracy” is what he rest of the world needs… arrogance… And you wonder why there’s a trend to support violent men, to disbelieve survivors, to elect belligerent/sociopathic/narcissistic leaders? The corrupt US system breeds for these types of horrible humans AND for those who will be complicit. Bred and indoctrinated on multiple levels throughout society.

True forgiveness and acceptance is really hard. Our shame spirals, ruminating repetitive negative and blaming thoughts, and Samskars are hard to let go of They're not Capital T "True" in the sense that those horrible things I say to myself are not objectively real; they're just judgments I've repeated so many times that I believe them. But they're not true, and (more importantly), they are unhelpful A loving friend, mentor, therapist, or parent would never judge me as harshly as I repeatedly judge myself. Jesus would never judge me that harshly And yet I have these beliefs repeating in my head so often that they are real to me. It feels real to me that I'm a sinner, that I regret hurting my business partner, my ex girlfriend, and my sister Anyway, please forgive yourself. I work on it often. "Shame is the raid boss of emotions" is a helpful video, too

Love your stuff. Question: how do you hold your partner's family responsible, since the norm is not to get involved if there is a triangle relationship - example of what a triangle relationship is: child has a conflict with stepmom's son and the child asks the stepmom to fix the son. But the stepmom tells the child that she is not involved and to talk to them to solve the issue. Not my situation but an example which can be applied
